The Race
I came upon this article, written by Edna Medd in an old “Lakeview” newspaper. She frequently submitted articles about events in the past. This is what she wrote:
“ The picture below could be entitled “The Race”. This dates back to the early 1900’s, and there actually was a race, at Whisky Jack Island, between the Dauphin doctors and some local fishermen. Unknown to the fishermen , the crafty Dauphin crew had hidden a man who knew all about sailing, in the bottom of the boat, and he instructed them how to manage the sails. The doctors won the race, I am told.”
– E. Medd
This story made me laugh! People were as competitive 100 years ago as today! Imagine, even then, they used a “ringer” to ensure winning. Can you “hear” the language when the fishermen found out!!!
